Gorman, JenniferJennifer Gorman

I am originally from a small town in western Massachusetts. I grew up in a that town and lived there until I moved to North Carolina two years ago. I chose to join AmeriCorps because I really like helping people. Also, I figured it would be a great way for me to meet more people in the area. After AmeriCorps, I would like to continue serving, whether that mean reapplying for at least another year, applying to the Peace Corps, or another opportunity that I have yet to be faced with. I would also like to finish my degree, become a certified public accountant, and work for the FBI as a forensic accountant. I could then use my connections to continue giving back to my community. I am passionate about making this world a better place. I also feel the education system needs to be redone. I feel that creativity in education is just as important as maths and sciences. Also, that we should be shaping education to meet each person’s needs, not the other way around. I like to spend my free time with family and friends. I also like to travel and learn about other cultures. Jennifer serves at the Glen Haven Community Center in Greensboro.

Where am I from? This is always a long and complicated answer for me, So my family is from the West African country at Cote ‘D’ ivoire.  I was born in Boston, Massachusetts, but I grew up in Charlotte, NC.  This is my 2nd year as an AmeriCorps member but my first year with ACCESS so I am new but not really to AmeriCorps. I enjoyed my experience with North Carolina Literacy Corps, but after studying abroad in Malaysia on refugees I knew that I had to be apart at the ACCESS program. After AmeriCorps I plan on going to graduate school to get my masters in Social Work. I am passionate about immigrants and refugees. I believe that they are what make this country and I think that doing the little I can to advocate, educate, and support this community would benefit us all in the long run. In my free time, I enjoy reading my bible, hanging out with my family, and friends, and going to church. Sydney serves at NC African Services Coalition in Greensboro.

I’m from Roanoke, VA and grew up in Roanoke, VA. It’s a small city but what has always been stated about where I’m from is that “Virginia is for Lovers.” I love to help and learn from my community and since I’m in college I figured this would be a great time to join AmeriCorps to not only learn about new cultures but also to make an impact to people in my community by helping to improve their lives. After AmeriCorps, I would like to work as an industrial engineer in the health care or medical field to help improve the working environment for clients/customers. I’m passionate about my family, friends, education, and doing what I can do to provide assistance to those in my community. I like to spend time with friends, family, go out on fun outings such as the trampoline park, movies, ice skating, hiking, and swimming. Sometime I would rather read a book and relax to have some peaceful time for myself. Mariah serves at NC African Services Coalition in Greensboro.
