Biographical Information
Teresa Wellendorf, the Jóvenes Sabias educator has been a part of the Family Life Council
since 2006, where she offers pregnancy prevention programs to adolescent Latino girls as well
as parenting programs to Latino families. Teresa has taught as an adjunct instructor at
Guilford Technical Community College and was nominated for the Excellence in Teaching award in 2004.
She is a certified Medical Technologist, a member of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists
since 1997, and has performed laboratory testing for six years. Her laboratory experience and
training enables her to teach human reproductive processes and the methods of preventing the spread
of sexually transmitted illnesses to a variety of participants. Throughout her work experiences,
she has participated in reaching out and recruiting both newcomers and the Latino community to participate
in educational programs and health access programs. She is currently a change agent at IMPACT Greensboro,
a member in Building Stronger Neighborhoods, the Latino Community Coalition of the Guilford Community
(La coalicion latina comunitaria de Guilford County), the Hispanic League of the Piedmont Triad, and the
president of the Medical Advisory Committee of Guilford Technical Community College.
Because she is a first generation Latina, she is in an ideal position to appreciate the conflicts that
develop when there is transition toward acculturation and Americanization. The parenting programs she
offers assist Latino parents to become more involved in all aspects of their children’s lives and in where
educational pursuits are concerned in particular. Additionally, alternate and positive parenting skills
are encouraged in an effort to produce a transition as seamless as possible into the American culture.
As an educator for adolescent Latinas, she can assist these young women unravel the complex structures that
surround them so that they can more easily become a positive presence in our community.
