Biographical Information

Abdullahi Sheikh is the founding Executive Director of the Charlotte-based, not-for-profit, Cross Cultural Resources (CCR), incorporated in 2003. Sheikh, who is fluent in English, Arabic, and Somali, manages CCR's program development, and coordinates the provision of high-quality interpretation services. Sheikh manages a contract with the state of North Carolina Office of Refugee Resettlement in the provision of follow-up services for refugees. CCR provides interpreter evaluation and cross-cultural training for industry and public and private agencies, including resettlement agencies and local communities.

Sheikh was the UNCG-Interpret Access Project (IAP) Local Area Coordinator from 2000 to 2003. During this time he facilitated the mission of IAP in the Charlotte, Mecklenburg County area and interacted with interpreters and service providers to ensure consistent interpreter recruitment and training to increase the available pool of qualified interpreters. He also supervised quality assurance design and implementation, and performed site visits.

From 1985 to 1987 Sheikh studied Arabic for non-Arabic speakers at King Abdul Aziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. In 1991, he earned a B.A. in European languages and English literature from King Abdul Aziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

From 1999 to 2000, he studied business administration and computers at the British Business Center in Cairo, and also received training in financial statements, data privacy, information security, and Six Sigma, (a disciplined method for eliminating process defects).

CNNC Research Fellow/
AmeriCorps ACCESS Project, Professional Corps Member, 2006-07

Abdullahi Sheikh was a CNNC Research Fellow and AmeriCorps ACCESS Project Professional Corps Member during the 2006-07 year. During this time Abdullahi engaged in the investigation of effective strategies to address the various challenges and obstacles encountered by immigrants and refugees, with limited English language proficiency, in North Carolina. Sheikh assisted with the coordination and facilitation of CNNC's Second Biennial Conference on New Immigrant Realities and disseminated relevant information from the conference to additional immigrant and refugee communities and service providers. Sheikh has also been developing cultural competency resources for serving Somali and other Middle Eastern refugees and immigrants.

Cross Cultural Resources, Inc. (CCR) is a non-profit organization that provides interpretation services, interpreter skill training, interpreter evaluation, and cultural competence education and training, for industry, public and private agencies. CCR has interpreters with many years of experience who specialize in various disciplines and understand the cultural background, and the values and beliefs of refugees and immigrants.
