Biographical Information
Tom Matyók is an Assistant Professor of Conflict Resolution at the
University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). Tom has extensive experience in the field of conflict analysis
and resolution as a practitioner and academic. Before moving to UNCG, he spent several years researching and
documenting the impact and working conditions of international merchant
seafarers. He served as the
director of the International Seafarers’ Center, an international
non-governmental organization. A major role of the Center was identifying and archiving the
slave-like conditions found on many international merchant ships.Tom has presented and testified to industry and government
officials regarding cross-cultural conflict and slavery in the
transnational merchant marine.
Tom has a variety of teaching and research interests including: culture
and conflict, inter-group relations and reconciliation programs,
conflict resolution and public policy, globalization, peace studies,
modern-day slavery, human trafficking, violence prevention and
intervention, community outreach and practice, refugee and immigrant
conflict resolution, and interdisciplinary models and theories.
