Silvia Bettez is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Cultural Foundations in the School of Education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She is a bilingual, bicultural, mixed-race Latina - the daughter of a Colombian mom and a U.S.-born French Canadian father.Silvia is a former community educator. Her work has always involved the promotion of social justice, and she has a particular interest in cross-cultural understanding and communication.
Her primary areas of research and teaching specialization include: sociology of education; race, class, and gender intersections; critical multicultural education; qualitative research methods; and feminist gender studies. She has publications that cover a variety of topics related to social justice including: social justice activist teaching, experiences of Latinas in higher education, stories of mixed race women, and teaching about globalization issues. Currently, she is embarking upon a new research project that involves interviewing mother-daughter, refugee pairs from Burma, Vietnam, and various African countries about their experiences of schooling and education before and after relocating to the United States.
