Interpreter Access Project - Translation Training

Contact: Susan Chilcott, Training Coordinator at 336.334.5411

Goal: To train bilingual individuals to be able to translate documents and materials professionally as a means to obtain culturally and linguistically appropriate health and human services for individuals with Limited English Proficiency, in accordance with Title VI.

The CNNC now offers Translation training. The need for this arose from the reoccurring requests to use staff interpreters to do translations and the recognition that it takes different training, (from interpreter training) to master this skill.

There are three levels of learning in the translation training curriculum as designed and taught by CNNC. Level 1 is about understanding the requirements of translation; Level 2 reviews English Grammar; Level 3 is in the development stage and will cover big project management and how to work with a translation agency.

Objectives:

  • To empower the trainees with the knowledge and skills to carry out basic translation assignments.
  • To advocate compliance with Title VI and the U.S. Civil Rights Act of 1964.
  • To help avoid miscommunication and promote better language service to Limited English Proficiency populations.

Population/Area Served: Bilingual individuals.

Sponsoring Source: Fee-based.

Instructor: Mr. Paul Ayao Ayivon, M.A. in Translation, is a trained interpreter and the Chairperson of the North Carolina Professional Interpreters' Association. Mr. Ayivon is fluent in six languages, with specialization in Spanish and French.
