North Carolina Professional Interpreters Association (NCPIA)

History:
The North Carolina Association of Professional Interpreters In the late 1980s and mostly in the 1990s, there was a dramatic need throughout State agencies and health and social services for trained Interpreters to help providers communicate efficiently with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) populations. That situation gave the opportunity to Area Health Education Councils (AHEC) and the UNCG Center for New North Carolinians to organize and provide professional Interpreter training. Though the number of trained interpreters has increased, the main challenges of the profession remain; the NCPIA has been founded to address those concerns and help solve whatever problems the Interpreter profession may encounter statewide.

Purpose:
Under the umbrella of the UNCG Center for New North Carolinians (CNNC) the NCPIA operates as an entity to promote

  • Efficient communication between LEP populations and health and human service providers,
  • Nationally recognized competency standards for professional interpreters,
  • Compliance with Title VI of the US Civil Rights Act of 1964,
  • State recognized certification and professional compensation for trained interpreters,
  • The development and maintenance of a high level training program, by updating the skills and knowledge of the profession.

Structure:
The NCPIA functions under the supervision of a steering committee and is headed by elected officers: a Chairperson, a Vice-chair, a Secretary, and Treasurer. These officers are elected at a duly called meeting once a year, and they serve a one-year term. They can be re-elected.

The NCPIA operates under the nonprofit designation of the UNCG CNNC.

The steering committee will implement activities and modify procedures based on NCPIA purpose and member recommendations.

Membership:
The NCPIA is a membership organization of persons who have completed at least Level I of the AHEC training or Module I of the CNNC Interpreter training program.

Upon approval by the steering committee, persons who have successfully completed other professional interpreter training programs will be eligible for membership.

There is a yearly membership fee. Click here for the latest NCPIA newsletter.
