Goal: To train interpreters to be culturally competent, professional interpreters as a means to obtain culturally and linguistically appropriate health and human services for individuals with Limited English Proficiency, in accordance with Title VI.
The CNNC has launched a strong ambulatory interpreter training program based on the Area Health Education Center Manuals, Bridging the Gap requirements, and deeply rooted in cultural diversity and competency.
There are three levels of learning in the interpreter training curriculum as designed and taught by CNNC. Level 1 covers the Code of Ethics, the Standards of Practice, and Cultural Competency; Level 2 focuses on Role-play and intensive practice of the skills learned at the previous level; Level 3 explores Advanced Medical Terminologies, Physiology, and Anatomy.
Objectives:
Population/Area Served: Thousands of bilingual individuals from various countries have been trained over the past 10 years across North Carolina and from several other states in the U.S.

Instructor: Ms. Arelys Chevalier, MSW, LCSW, Social Work faculty, has completed the Bridging the GAP Medical Interpreting and Training of Trainers for medical interpreters as well the University of Arizona Medical Interpreters' Training.
Other professionally trained interpreters affiliated with the CNNC also assist with training, including Paul Ayivon, who is fluent in six languages.
