The Duke Energy-CNNC Consumer Safety Education Project

Contact: Dr. H. Nolo Martínez at 336.256.1061

Goal: The goal of The Duke Energy-CNNC Consumer Safety Education Project is to set up successful statewide communication methods and channels and to build an enduring network of bilingual professionals to support the growing population of Limited English Proficiency (LEP) residents of North Carolina. This CNNC network will consist of UNCG AmeriCorps ACCESS members working across the state and the North Carolina Association of Professional Interpreters (NCAPI).

Objectives
To reach immigrant populations across the state (particularly those in the Duke Energy's service area) and to promote consumer safety, worker safety and electrical safety messages, CNNC proposes to produce and implement the following:

  • A Spanish version Indoor and Outdoor Electrical Safety Check booklet.
  • Bilingual voice recordings to be used by Spanish radio stations across the state.
  • Distribution of bilingual flyers for children to help immigrant families find all of the electrical faults in their home.
  • Expansion of a bilingual website with consumer safety PSAs that cover more than 12 consumer safety topics in English and Spanish.
  • Radio programs on two radio stations that reach the Triad, the Triangle and Eastern North Carolina.
  • Outreach to immigrant churches with provision of resource materials.

Population/Area Served: Statewide Spanish-speaking population.
